Jewellery Care A good understanding of how to take care of your jewellery is essential to prolong the longevity and attractiveness of your private collection. A few simple steps to follow and you can enjoy your fine pieces of jewellery well. Gold Gold is measured in karat. This is the preferred precious metal to be used for fine jewellery. The basic colour of gold is yellow. Based on the mixture of other metals to gold, we have a family of white, various shades of yellow ranging from dark to light, rose. The mixture of other metals is referred to as alloy. Various weight of gold used to create jewellery: 24 karat: 100% gold (Rarely used for setting stones as it is too soft) 22 karat: 91.7% gold (Rarely used for setting stones as it is too soft) 18 karat: 75% gold (Good strength and quality for use to create jewellery) 14 karat: 58.3% gold (More alloy than gold but still good to create jewellery) 10 karat: 41.7% gold (Minimum legal karat of gold within U.S. for use to create jewellery) Gold is a valuable metal that is both strong and durable. From 18 karat and below, the strength of gold is harder and the piece of jewellery can retain its form and shine better than the softer 24k and 22k gold. Care of Designer Diamonds Gold jewellery Use mild warm soapy water and with a soft bristle brush, gently brush between crevices of jewellery to remove dirt. Rinse in clear water and pad dry with soft cloth. Air dry until no moisture is collected within the crevices. Store in a jewellery pouch individually. Do not put more than one piece of jewellery in the same bag to avoid scratches from one another. It takes care and attention to prolong the attractiveness of your priced possession. Jewellery is the same. Check the settings for looseness every six months to ensure the gemstone is secure. Have your gold jewellery polished by a respectable jeweler after prolonged wear. Normal Wear Even though, gold will not tarnish, it is good practice to take off your rings, bracelets, necklaces, prior to emerging into water with chlorine, scented oil and cosmetics. Chlorine will erode the surface of your gold jewellery causing breaking point for easy scratches. Scented oil and cosmetics can build up grime easily and will accumulate in the crevices of your jewellery causing a dull film on it. In the case of diamond, which attracts oil onto its surface naturally, your stone will not be as brilliant due to the oil build up and frequent cleaning will be required. Pearl Pearl, an organic gem of nature can bring a radiant look to its wearer. They are very resilient and durable but proper care is necessary to keep your pearls lustrous and beautiful. Care of Pearl Love jewellery Hairspray, perfume or cosmetics that contain chemical substances, or acidity of the human body through perspiration, body oils, and such can dull the luster of pearls. Wipe your pearls with a damp cloth and let it air dry. Should cosmetic and perfume accumulate, a very mild soap may be used. To minimize exposure to chemicals, pearls should be the last to be put on and the first to be taken off daily. Do not keep your pearls in plastic containers or in the vault for long period of time as pearls needs moisture to prevent from cracks and dullness. Keep pearls separate from diamonds or harder stones to prevent scratching the surface. When traveling isolate your pearls in a soft velvet container or wrap in a linen handkerchief. Restring pearl strands that are worn often annually.
